Did Russian soldiers rape Ukrainian women?

Since the Russian invasion, Ukrainian officials have noted multiple instances of sexual abuse of girls, women, children and men by Russian forces.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had forced millions of women to flee for their lives. Helga Maria Schmid, the secretary-general of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, said that young girls and women in Ukraine have been the victims of rape and sexual violence.

Pramila Patten, the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, told the U.N. Security Council that allegations of sexual violence committed by Russian soldiers against women in Ukraine are mounting.

Natalia Karbowska, a co-founder and director of strategic development for the Ukrainian Women’s Fund, said that Russian troops have forcefully taken women and children to camps in Russia to exploit them sexually.

In April, the UN demanded an independent investigation into the rape and sexual violence cases in Ukraine.

In April, Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported that a Russian soldier raped a 31-year-old in a school in the Kharkiv region. In June, a 19-year-old Ukrainian woman said she was raped by a drunk Russian soldier.

Lyudmila Denisova, the Ukrainian parliament’s human rights ombudsman, said a young boy was also reportedly raped by a Russian soldier.

Another horrifying incident took place in Bucha. When Russian soldiers withdrew from the Kyiv suburb of Bucha, surviving Ukrainian eyewitnesses said that Russian soldiers raped dozens of women in the town.
