Who Qualifies for EPFO Automatic Refund Eligibility?
Your account may be in line for the EPFO inactive account refund if it ticks all these boxes:
Dormant/inoperative: No contributions made for a long period of time
- Balances of ₹1,000 or below: the pilot is going to just small-balance accounts
- Aadhaar-linked UAN: EPFO conducted a ‘penny drop’ exercise on Aadhaar-verified accounts.
- Current bank account (active and verified): must have a current bank account that has been verified on file.
- KYC complete: Both PAN and Aadhaar along with bank account must be approved on the EPFO portal.
The accounts which have more than ₹1000 balance will not be included in this phase but can be included in future if the scheme is extended.
Steps to Verify EPF Refund Status (in Detail)
Step 1: Login to EPFO Member Portal. Login at member.epfindia.gov.in with UAN and password
Step 2: KYC Check: In “Manage → KYC” ensure “Aadhaar”, “PAN” and “Bank account” are all Verified/Approved.
Step 3: Check passbook: Go to “Passbook” and note the date of your last contribution and the balance in your passbook. If the balance is ₹1,000 or less and there is no recent activity, that’s a good sign you’re eligible.
Step 4: Update your bank account as appropriate If you have an old or closed linked account, update it immediately. • You may not be entitled to a refund on an inactive account.
Step 5: EPFO Notification Wait: If your number is selected, EPFO will notify you immediately after the software upgrade goes live through your registered mobile or email. The upgrade is expected to be live by the end of August 2026.

FAQs
Is there anything I’m missing out on to get my refund?
No. EPFO will reflect the balance, including interest, in your bank account if you’re eligible without any action on your part.
My balance is above ₹1,000. Am I excluded?
For now, yes. As of now, the pilot can be done only for accounts worth ₹1000. A successful rollout will result in the activation of 24.76 lakh more inoperative accounts in Phase 2, holding higher value accounts.
If I don’t have the required KYC, what will happen?
Your account will be skipped. Visit the EPFO website and do KYC before August, as the deadline for doing KYC is in this period.
How would I know if my account has become inoperative?
Look in your passbook for the last contribution date. Many of them are likely to be inactive if there have been no deposits in recent years and your employer is no longer active in your account.
Act Before August — Here’s Why It Matters
The EPFO refund process 2026 is an automated procedure, but it is applicable for accounts where all things are in order. If your bank account is stale, Aadhaar is not linked, or there is an absence of KYC, it will push you out of the queue. Today, you can retrieve your money without even filing any documents by spending 5 minutes on the EPFO Member Portal.
