10-Year-Old Rape Survivor Denied Abortion After Supreme Court Overturned Roe Vs Wade

United States – A 10-year-old rape survivor was denied an abortion in Ohio after the Supreme Court of the United States overturned the historic Roe vs Wade decision that guaranteed abortion rights across the country.

The rape survivor case became public three days after the apex court’s ruling on 24 June after Ohio’s law, which prohibits abortions six weeks into the pregnancy, came into effect. The rape survivor was six weeks and three days pregnant.

The girl had to travel to Indiana, in the Midwestern United States, for an abortion. Reportedly, a doctor who treats child abuse survivors in Ohio contacted Dr Caitlin Bernard, an obstetrician-gynaecologist in Indiana, to take care of the girl child. The overturning of Roe vs Wade affected this girl child.

Ohio is among a number of states that banned abortion after the Supreme Court ruling. However, several groups filed a lawsuit seeking to block Ohio’s law from taking effect in the state.

Indiana may hold a special assembly session soon in which the legislature is expected to impose some sort of ban on abortions. Indiana could impose its own abortion law later this month.

US Supreme Court Overturned Roe Vs Wade

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court of the US abolished abortion rights. The judges struck down the historic Roe vs Wade judgment that legalised abortion across the country.  Many world leaders criticised the judgment.

During the 1973 Roe v Wade ruling, the court said that the country could not ban abortions before fetal viability.

After the Supreme Court’s decision, restrictions on abortions took place in about half of the states in the country. These restrictions were even applicable to those who got pregnant because of rape.

Recently, a temporary restraining order was issued by the Judge in Harris County in order to resume abortion services in Texas.

Meanwhile, most Americans have opposed an outright abortion ban in the country.
