Russian soldiers have used sexual violence as a “weapon of war” in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian women are bearing the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The stories about Russian soldiers raping Ukrainian women are not fake. In the context of war, women are often targeted by men.

Did Russian soldiers rape Ukrainian women?

Since the Russian invasion, Ukrainian officials have noted multiple instances of sexual abuse of girls, women, children and men by Russian forces.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had forced millions of women to flee for their lives. Helga Maria Schmid, the secretary-general of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, said that young girls and women in Ukraine have been the victims of rape and sexual violence.

Natalia Karbowska, a co-founder and director of strategic development for the Ukrainian Women’s Fund, said that Russian troops have forcefully taken women and children to camps in Russia to exploit them sexually.

In April, the UN demanded an independent investigation into the rape and sexual violence cases in Ukraine.

Stories of Russian soldier raping Ukrainian women is true

In April, BBC reported that a Russian soldier raped a 50-year-old woman and killed her husband in a rural neighbourhood west of the Kyiv region. In April, Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported that a Russian soldier raped a 31-year-old in a school in the Kharkiv region. In June, a 19-year-old Ukrainian woman said she was raped by a drunk Russian soldier.

Lyudmila Denisova, the Ukrainian parliament’s human rights ombudsman, said a young boy was also reportedly raped by a Russian soldier.

Another horrifying incident took place in Bucha. When Russian soldiers withdrew from the Kyiv suburb of Bucha, surviving Ukrainian eyewitnesses said that Russian soldiers raped dozens of women in the town.

Around 25 girls and women aged 14 to 24 were systematically raped in the basement of one house in Bucha. According to the BBC, nine of them became pregnant. More incidents are unreported because of the mass internal displacement and stigma associated with sexual violence.
