I knew a girl who worked a solid month without pay because her boss decided not to pay her for her extra hours. No one had told her that she might ask. That’s the problem with human rights at work, they only help if you know they exist.” Here’s a simple guide to the employee rights that apply to nearly every job, in nearly every country.
Workplace Rights: Getting Paid and Being Safe
1.A secure work environment: Broken gear, broken machines and wet floors are your employer’s problem. A safe workplace is not a benefit.
2.Fair wages on time: Fair wages are what you agreed to and paid when you were told.
3.Equal Treatment: You will not be discriminated against on the grounds of gender, faith, age, race or disability.
4.No harassment: If something bothers you, you don’t have to put up with it.
5.Relax: Rest days and holidays are not a prize for work done. They are a part of the work.
Empower You Human Rights at Work
6.Forming a union: Workers have the right to organize and negotiate collectively.
7.Privacy: Not everyone needs to be looking at your health records and personal information.
8.No exploitation and child labor: Work should be a choice, and childhood a priority.
9.Your voice: You can’t be fired for complaining.
10.Terms of writing: Your employment terms, salary and period of notice should be set down in writing.
Small contract? Part-time? New already? That doesn’t change the list. If things go wrong keep copies of payslips and messages and note dates. First, ask your manager and get the answer in writing. If that doesn’t get you anywhere your next step is a local labor office or an ombudsman or a free legal aid service.
