The Google UK union agreement signed on 2 November 2026 is a watershed moment in protecting the rights of tech workers in Britain. It provides the Prospect union space to organise among some 7,000 staff at Google, as new employment rules open up workplace space for unions. It’s a more pressing question for staff, however: if artificial intelligence is becoming a factor in workplace decisions and even job descriptions, what role will collective bargaining have for them?
Quick Facts
- Deal signed: 2 November 2026
- This was first developed by the union involved, representing 160,000+ UK workers.
- Staff covered: 7,000+ (Google UK including YouTube)
- Not covered: Google DeepMind, where the Communication Workers Union and Unite are looking for an alternative deal
- Union recognition: Not achieved
- The same precedent: Prospect’s deal with Meta, which involves approximately 5,000 UK workers.
What the Google UK Union Agreement Means in Practice
The Google UK union deal means that Prospect will be able to hold talks in the Google UK offices, which are located at King’s Cross, and directly with non-unionised workers. In the past, unions were forced to organise “off the premises”.
Google claims to have agreed to do so under the new law, and that it has already established good relations via internal employee representative groups.
There’s one detail to keep in mind: This is an access deal. The union can communicate and recruit, but only if they formally enter into collective bargaining negotiations with the employer about pay or technology would there be a next step, which would be recognition.
Why AI Sits at the Centre of the Debate
AI deployment, in addition to pay, flexibility and workplace culture, were among the areas where AI tech workers should have a louder voice, according to Prospect’s general secretary Mike Clancy. It’s not a coincidence. Unseen changes in roles due to Algorithmic management, automated performance tools and AI job restructuring.
These tools are very real for employees at a company like Google, as AI affects many aspects of their work. It’s a question of employment every day.
Can Employees Actually Challenge AI Decisions?
If not under this contract, then under any other. The rights of access have nothing to do with the use of AI in the working world. What they’re doing is developing the membership that will allow bargaining to occur at a future time.
If they are going to be recognised, realistic questions might be:
- AI transparency in the workplace, ensuring employees understand the impact of AI on their working lives
- AI decisions relating to Pay, performance, and Redundancy – human oversight
- Consulting employees prior to large-scale implementation of AI.Engaging employees before implementing AI on a large scale.
- Establish measures to prevent job insecurity due to AI.
What Happens Next
DeepMind‘s separate presentations will explain the prospects for unions to gain greater rights in Google’s AI research division. Meanwhile, the TUC is predicting a slew of private deals in the coming year, whilst Prospect believes there’s a new “normal” forming for tech companies and that these will include maintaining a relationship with unions. It could be the Google UK union deal that’s the template.
What Google UK Employees Can Do Now
- Make it a point to visit Prospect’s workplaces and directly inquire about their AI focus.
- Engage managers in a discussion about how AI tools are used in performance evaluations or restructuring.
- Write down changes to your role that relate to AI.
- Implement internal representative groups and union channels.
The Bottom Line
There’s no veto on AI for 7,000 people as part of the Google UK union deal. It provides them with a structured way to ask for it. Whether that path will result in real protection depends on the number of workers who join and if and when there are any recognitions.
