May Pen Hospital in Clarendon recently open a 40-bed mobile field hospital. The hospital was donated by the United Sates Government through the US Embassy in Jamaica, and it valued to be at J $132 million.

Inaugurated on September 15, the hospital forms part of U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) ongoing assistance to nations in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. The entire project will be funded by the Command’s Humanitarian Assistance Program (HAP).

Making the hospital more accessible and complete, this field hospital is even equipped with a remote generator. Dr. Christopher Tufton, who is a Minister of Health & Wellness, mentioned that he really wants to put on record his appreciation for this facility. As they are looking at adding capacity more than 300 to 350 beds, they also are providing standards. The truth is no public health system could have adequately planned for this Pandemic, so their healthcare facility must make provisions in these extreme cases

It is also appreciated that the donation received for the field hospital shows the strength of the relationship between the countries and symbolizes the collaboration that is necessary to confront and overcome the global pandemic.

Tufton added that a collaborative solution has to be found in these cases, noting that the timing of the pandemic and its impact on the people is required to evolve in terms of a plan and a strategy to add capacity as people went along, whether its human, equipment or infrastructure capacity.
