There’s some really great news for young people looking to get a head start in the job market: the UK Government has just announced plans to make one of its biggest career boosters for young people in years, with 300,000 free work experience and training placements available and supported by £2.5bn of public funding.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is the Youth Support Scheme UK?

The youth support scheme UK is part of the government’s Youth Guarantee, which is a commitment to ensure access to a genuine pathway to work or education for all young people. The scheme is aimed at those young people in the UK who fall into the ‘not in education, employment or training’ category, and provides a practical and structured route back in.

Placements are across high-demand areas such as:

  • Construction — where record numbers of starts were recorded in 2025/26
  • Health and Social Care
  • Hospitality

This is not a classroom-based course. You learn to use these skills on the job, and in many instances, you’ll leave with a job interview.

What’s on offer?

This UK government training programme has at its core a concept known as a SWAP (Sector-based Work Academy Programme). SWAPs are a short, government-funded course for young people who are looking for work and include:

  1. Training that caters to a particular sector of the industry.
  2. Hands-on workplace experience
  3. A commitment to a job interview with an employer participating in the program.

The outcomes are clear: within 6 months, 40% of SWAP participants are in sustained work, and they take home an average of £1400 per month.

Leading employers such as Manchester Airport Group, JD and Gatwick Airport are already signed up. In total, more than 81 people qualified in aviation at Gatwick, and more than half of them have since found employment at airports since early 2026.

The range of youth employment support in the UK, in addition to SWAPs, includes:

  • A £3,000 Youth Jobs Grant for young, eligible people
  • 50,000 additional youth apprenticeships

Who Can Apply?

These government-sponsored training courses are aimed at those who have the following requirements:

CriteriaDetails
Age16 to 24 years old
Benefits StatusClaiming Universal Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
LocationAvailable across the United Kingdom

If you have checked those, you are well on your way to having the opportunity to benefit from this free vocational training UK offer.

How to Apply — Step by Step

It’s much easier than you think to get on to a placement. These are the 3 main routes you have:

1. Visit Your Local Jobcentre Plus

This is the quickest way. Get into the office (or make an appointment) and let your Work Coach know that you’d like a SWAP or youth placement. They will verify your eligibility and will refer you directly; there will be no paperwork involved.

2. Search the Find a Job Service

The government’s Find a Job site provides details of jobs that are currently available, placements in schemes and apprenticeship opportunities provided by partner employers and is regularly updated. If you’re in search mode, it’s a good idea to save it for later.

3. Drop In to a Youth Hub

Youth Hubs are activated throughout the country as part of the enhanced youth job support initiative. These are in-house drop-in areas where you will be able to meet advisors who can help you find training, support and jobs in your area.

Why This Matters for Under-24s

The employability skills programme comes at a critical time. The country faces the risk of producing a “lost generation” of young people unless they have an authentic and structured opportunity to gain work experience, an independent review on the issue of youth unemployment has warned. The review also pointed out that the first step on the career ladder is becoming increasingly difficult to get to – something this scheme aims to rectify.

This is one of the largest career training opportunities in recent years for under 24s looking for work across the UK. Almost 100,000 SWAPs were already delivered in 2025/26, and the Government has ambitious plans for 115,000 starts in the year ahead.

Quick Summary

The youth support scheme at a glance:

  • 300,000 free training and work experience opportunities
  • Supported by £2.5 billion of Government investment
  • Available for children from 16-24 on benefits
  • Industries covered are construction, healthcare and hospitality.
  • SWAPs consist of training + guaranteed job interview
  • Use the Jobcentre Plus, Find a Job or local Youth Hub application.
