Poundland Store Closures 2026: Could Staff Lose Their Jobs Even if B&M and Iceland Take Over?

(C): X

The threat of Poundland store closures in 2026 is no longer far-fetched for those behind the counter. The chain is under threat of possible insolvency as a result of a boardroom feud between the majority owner of the discounter and his rivals already licking their chops at the stores. However, if another business entity acquires the business, it is not necessary to acquire the employees of the sold business. What’s on the employees’ minds?

Key Highlights

  • Poundland runs more than 600 store locations in the UK and Ireland, and has more than 10,000 employees.
  • Three directors, whose names have been reported to be close to resigning, are reportedly involved in an argument with owner Gordon Brothers.
  • A proposal from Martin Property Group has yet to be accepted as a solvent offer, but a redone bid may still be received within 48 hours.
  • Some stores reportedly have received offers from B&M, Iceland and Poundstretcher and The Range.
  • The filing of an administration proposal may arrive in the Budget in hours—not days.

What Is Happening at Poundland?

The disagreement hinges on a £30m loan from the shareholders. Gordon Brothers is believed to have a better chance of getting repayment in full should the business be split, whereas Martin Property Group has offered to pay back the loan on existing terms. Innovest Holdings is also rumoured to be circling. Failure would mean Poundland becomes one of the largest retail failures of the last few years, and the latest in a wave of retail job cuts in the UK in 2026.

Why a Takeover Doesn’t Guarantee Your Job

A B&M takeover of Poundland stores or an Iceland takeover of Poundland stores would be selective, as retailers are interested in different numbers of stores. There may be only the best-performing stores that are sought after by buyers, and weaker shops may be forced to close. This is because a store that’s been ‘saved’ may be rebranded or run by a different company, and Poundland store closures in 2026 could affect employees at stores that may be sold.

Your Rights When a Business Changes Hands

The UK retail worker is covered by TUPE rules if their business (or a separate part of their business) passes from one owner to another. If TUPE applies, then posts move across with staff pay and contract details, length of service and dismissal for the reasons of the move is generally unfair.

Unfortunately, it does not necessarily constitute the transfer of a business to buy only a lease or premises. If so, it may have the opportunity to hire its own people and staff transfers might not be applicable.

Redundancy and Compensation

Subject to a lack of transfer, if a store closes, then redundancy rules apply. Statutory redundancy pay is usually paid to employees who have served for at least two years. Collective consultation must be undertaken prior to employers making 20 or more redundancies at one location. In the case of an insolvent company, statutory redundancy is automatically covered by the government’s redundancy scheme, as are unpaid wages and some notice and holiday payments, up to certain limits.

What Poundland Staff Should Do Now

  • Save documents: Contracts, payslips and written updates.
  • Understand your length of service, which will impact on eligibility for redundancy and the amount.
  • Consultation with union representatives; they can negotiate.
  • Avoid panic resignation: A voluntary resignation may impact your claim.

The Bottom Line

Over the next few days, Poundland’s fate is likely to be decided, either whole, in pieces or put into administration. The key issue for workers is not only who the buyers of the shops are but whether workers are bought along with them. This is general information, and not legal advice, so affected employees should refer to their union, ACAS, or an employment lawyer for advice.
