Microsoft Buyout Offer 2026: Could 60,000 Employees Face Layoffs If They Refuse to Leave?

With the Microsoft buyout offer 2026, about a quarter of the company’s employees are at a crossroads. A memo sent Monday offers a voluntary ouster of up to 60,000 workers in the US, Canada, the UK and India, and at the same time, Microsoft invests tens of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure. One thing looms in the minds of every worker: If I refuse, then later will my team be reduced, and will a hard exit be awaiting me? The content of the memo, what it’s missing and how to approach it.

Quick Facts

  • Coverage: Accompanied employees in participating teams in the US, Canada, UK & India (some VP’s are covered; corporate VP’s are not covered)
  • Scale: Up to 60,000 of roughly 223,000 employees
  • Requirements: No minimum age or tenure, and performance is not a factor
  • Decision window: Until the first week of December
  • Package: Standard severance and stock vesting, fixed-period healthcare and career support
  • The catch: Microsoft says layoffs remain an option

What Is the Microsoft Employee Buyout?

It’s a voluntary separation package that expands the retirement program, initiated this year. This spring’s offer was only made to those employees who had been with the U.S. for a longer period, and approximately 30% took up the offer. This time it’s wider, though one would assume that Microsoft expects much less response.

Who Is Eligible and Who Is Left Out?

You must be a member of a team to be eligible. The decision on participation is up to the business leaders depending on priorities, pledges of customers and staffing requirements. The sales organisation, a few engineering teams and corporate functions aren’t included. The details will be sent via email to all employees who are eligible to receive the same.

What Does the Severance Package Include?

The package is similar to the one offered by Microsoft servers, which includes compensation based on length of service and level, ongoing stock vests, healthcare benefits for a set number of years and career transition benefits. One difference matters. It doesn’t even go along with the extra health benefits that were part of the spring retirement package.

Will Microsoft Layoffs Follow If You Say No?

The memo makes no assurances of safety. Microsoft has stated that it does not intend to sacrifice its layoffs for laid-off people for the sake of voluntary terminations when the need arises. More than 15,000 jobs are still being cut at the company, with about 4,800 eliminated in July and hundreds more in September. In this context, the Microsoft buyout offer in 2026 appears to be an additional option to reengineer teams, instead of reducing them.

The chief people officer called it a decision for those already thinking about leaving the company, and said there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for teams or employees.

How Workers Can Weigh the Decision

  • Inquire with your supervisor if everyone in your group is involved in that and what they will do to accommodate staffing changes.
  • Compare the terms. Since the package is comparable to standard severance, ask if there’s anything that you can get by leaving the job that you can’t get by taking a severance package.
  • Check out the email carefully for pay, stock and healthcare information and verify prior to the December deadline.
  • Think about your next move. Consider what you will do next. Take into account your abilities, your industry and when you would be able to get a new job.
  • Get outside advice. You have a financial/family law advisor who will be able to provide you with some comparisons.

Bottom Line

This offer is to provide the employees a true option – not a certainty. Remaining unchanged could be a safe bet for some teams and a risky option for others – and the company has stated that layoffs remain an option. Consider the costs, the team’s momentum and your self-assurance in your next career move before the deadline.
