The Micron workers strike in Taiwan is the first time workers in Taiwan have been recognised as workers, and the only one they have agreed upon is the establishment of a permanent profit-sharing system. With a record fiscal 2026, the cash bonus is ~$31,000, and that does not equate to a steady chunk of future profits, employees say. This is one of the most cohesive union ballots seen in the semiconductor industry this year, with 99% approving.
Quick Facts
| Detail | Info |
| Strike Vote | 99% in favour (1,994 members) |
| Bonus Paid | ~31,000(T1 million) |
| Core Demand | Permanent profit-sharing structure |
| Taiwan Workforce | ~15,000 employees |
| Mediation Status | Ongoing (Taichung); Failed (Taoyuan) |
Bonus vs. Profit Sharing: The Real Difference
This is the crux of the Micron labour dispute – and it’s simpler than it sounds.
| One-Time Bonus | Profit Sharing | |
| Frequency | One-off | Recurring |
| Tied to profits? | Not always | Yes |
| Worker security | Low | High |
The workers do not object to the bonus. They’re saying that it is not enough by itself. AI is a hot commodity, and when a company generates record profits, staff members are looking for a steady, ongoing payout, not one based on the company’s whims and fancies.
Why Now?
Memory chip makers have hit record profits with the AI chip revolution. The chips that can run AI servers, namely Micron’s DRAM and HBM chips, are in high demand. Its workers who helped make that success happen, and they want compensation for Mic employees to keep rising—now, and in the years to come.
There was also a trust issue; the union that offered the bonus, Mic, announced it while the union was still in the middle of the labour mediation, without reaching an agreement first. The move helped to propel the process towards a formal vote for a strike.
What’s Next
October 19 will see a worker rally in Taipei. Mediation with the Taoyuan union has broken down; the Taichung union is still negotiating. Any disruption would have the potential to shrink global chip supplies, with Taiwan a major producer of AI server components.
FAQs on Micron Workers Strike
Why is it that Micron workers are going on strike for a $31,000 bonus?
The bonus is a one-time bonus. The workers want a permanent profit-sharing system with periodic payouts based on company profits, rather than the management’s whims.
What are Micron’s employees looking for in a profit-sharing program?
A contractual, periodic portion of profits (not discretionary).
Will this have an impact on chip availability?
Yes. Taiwan is a key player in the production of Micron’s AI chips. A prolonged semiconductor workers’ strike could further narrow an already tight global market.
