There has been talk of Canva layoffs again, and it’s an ill-timed event. The design platform is profitable and has a big pile of cash, but reports are that in November they are hearing of further redundancies or even a hiring freeze. Canva has yet to confirm either of the moves. But why are employees of a healthy company feeling uneasy? Jobs are changing with the rise of AI, slowdowns in growth and tech-wide cost discipline.
Quick Facts
- Rumour: Canva has made no official announcement, but rumour has it that there are more redundancies to be announced in November, or a hiring freeze.

What Is Being Reported About Canva Job Cuts
Rumours are not coming from an official memo, but rather from within the company, so it remains unconfirmed. Nevertheless, the previous round puts workers on their guard.
Last year, Canva cut its writing capabilities, saying that the engineering team will be more responsible for documentation, which will be backed up by new tools. It would move displaced people to other locations if they could and would pay a handsome price to the others.
Why Canva’s Financial Position Doesn’t Guarantee Job Security
There is a fundamental difference between good finances and safe employment. The Canva user base increased by around 20% in 2025 to reach over 265 million monthly active users and 31 million paid users. Despite this, the company reduced its forecast of revenue growth for 2026 by one-third.
CEO Melanie Perkins said the number was lower than it was at the start of the year, when they set an ambitious target for the rollout of the AI, but had to slowly pace it to reshape the architecture and reduce the unit cost. The obvious question for Canva staff is, when growth slows, and AI requires some kind of domestication, do hiring strategies change as well?
AI-Driven Automation Is Changing the Equation
The technical writing cuts demonstrate the shift in the way technical writing is being done with AI-powered automation. Canva has been focusing on bringing AI to the heart of its product approach, as well as having launched Canva AI 2.0 and one more update is said to be in the works. Canva’s co-founder Cliff Obrecht has also noted that the company needs to compete with top AI labs, which are moving at a faster rate.
When it comes to speed, it’s often a matter of smaller teams. If the business is successful, its roles in documentation, content and support may feel the pressure first.
The Wider Tech Workforce Picture
Canva is not alone. As of now, 679 tech companies have made 198,882 job cuts, which would average about 650 layoffs per day in 2026. In 2025, 783 companies cut 245,953 jobs. There was a shift in the news cycle to talking about layoffs in the tech industry, so much so that it’s now something of a background hum.
What Canva Employees Can Do Now
In tech firms, not everyone is at risk for job loss, and there are still things workers can do to ease their concerns:
- Make your CV more impactful by incorporating quantifiable results, particularly those related to AI applications.
- Develop additional skills to expand resourcing opportunities.
- Be aware of the rights you have, such as notice and severance.
- Maintain a warm network as the digital design world tends to rely on referrals.
Final Thoughts
The layoffs at Canva are not as much about a company in distress, and much more about a company in transition. While cash reserves provide a buffer, they don’t keep all roles safe from restructuring in the age of AI reshaping the way things get done. So until Canva is officially on the scene, it’s best to get your duffers in gear and prepare in silence.
