Why Did Tyson Close the Joslin Plant?
Fiscal 2026 is expected to be a year of beef losses, with Tyson Foods estimating a $500 to $650 million loss in the beef business due to a shortage of cattle across the nation and rising cattle prices. The company is streamlining its beef production throughout, closing a number of older, less modern plants, and Joslin wasn’t the one to go. The plant in Eagle Mountain, Utah, will also be closed, and the Pasco, Washington, plant is slated for sale as part of the Tyson Foods plant closure.
What Benefits Can Workers Claim?
1. WARN Act Pay Continuation
Tyson has met requirements under the federal WARN Act, which allows most workers to continue to receive pay through Oct. 12, 2026 regardless of whether their duties ended Aug. 13-14. This is not a severance payment; it’s a PAYMENT for the notice period as per law. Check with HR or UFCW Local 1546 for the official termination date.
2. Illinois Unemployment Insurance (IDES)
Unemployment compensation, through the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES), is available for displaced workers who file for it at ides.illinois.gov or over the phone. Must have enough prior wages, be actively seeking employment and be willing to work. Please allow 7–10 business days for a UI Finding letter to be received.
For Iowa residents who had an Iowa job, submit an application through Iowa Workforce Development (IWD); benefits are based on employment, not residence.
3. Rapid Response Services
The State of Illinois provides free Rapid Response services to workers and/or employees who are impacted by a mass layoff, which include assisting them with career counselling, resume preparation, interview preparation and direct connections to workforce development specialists. Call the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to sign up for a session.
4. Retraining and Career Programs
Eligible displaced workers may get occupational training in career fields such as manufacturing, logistics and healthcare through funded occupational training as part of WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act). It’s entered through the local American Job Centre in Rock Island and Henry Counties.
