Oracle’s AI Growth keeps on growing. This week, Oracle expanded its Nvidia chip deal and added Google and Cerebras gear to the cloud. But about 21,000 jobs were cut from Oracle just months ago. In the eyes of employees, the key is whether the Oracle AI strategy will result in jobs being created or will it be a reconfiguration of the jobs?
Quick Facts
- Oracle job cuts 2026: About 21,000 roles (13%), cutting headcount from 162,000 to 141,000 by May 31, 2026.
- Exit costs: $1.84 billion in severance and restructuring, versus $374 million a year earlier.
- New chips: Multi-gigawatt Nvidia Vera Rubin servers, plus Google TPUs and Cerebras and SambaNova inference chips.
- Spending target: Roughly $90–95 billion in capital spending for fiscal 2027.
- Fresh cuts: A new round reportedly began September 14, with some teams losing over 10%.
- Warning sign: Oracle’s filing says AI-driven job losses may continue.
What Oracle Just Announced
The Oracle AI expansion focuses on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin systems, has multi-gigawatt capacity, a mix of Nvidia networking with its own networking gear, Acceleron, and introduces Google TPUs for the first time. It has not specified what it will charge, but recently customers are paying for the chip. While it was a sign of confidence in this Oracle AI infrastructure investment and further expansion of Oracle’s business, enterprise AI investment does not always ensure a workforce, nor does Oracle have its hiring plans out.
Why the Oracle AI Expansion Worries Workers
Oracle’s annual filing links its Oracle workforce restructuring to AI, claiming it has cut down its workforce and could continue to do so. Furthermore, it recognises that reskilling employees might be unsuccessful. Oracle Health took in 8,000 to 10,000 exits, with analysts estimating in the deal’s announcement that Oracle would see 50% to 80% of its exits in the United States. Oracle employees in the United States reportedly lost access to their systems in September. It is notable that Oracle staff were laid off, which is a testament to how unexpected these workforce cuts due to AI can be, and how insecure Oracle employees’ jobs can be.
Could Cloud and Data-Center Roles Be Next?
At the moment, there has been no confirmation of the new Oracle cloud layoffs that go with this announcement, and so, caution is advised. However, there are three indicators that need to be considered:
- Building needs people. Data centres are still going to require electricians, network personnel and the operations team, so there’s no reason to think that data centre technician jobs and Oracle data centre jobs are going to disappear overnight.
- There is a direct relationship between the custom silicon shift and demand. Favouring specialists, one of several shifts in the data centre workforce that impact cloud engineering jobs, is in-house chips and multiple vendors.
- There’s a real cost constraint. This kind of expenditure could lead to some economies in other areas, creating an imbalance in Oracle cloud computing employment.
These trends are similar to the cloud computing job market and the overall data centre job market. Layoffs in the tech industry in 2026, tech industry restructuring, and job losses in the IT industry reveal that companies are reducing their staff in the tech sector to invest in jobs related to AI infrastructure, while AI automation and employment are now closely intertwined.
What Tech Workers Can Do Now
Inference workload skills and multi-vendor hardware and cloud networking appear more likely to withstand whatever the Oracle AI expansion delivers than is routine support. For anyone considering an Oracle career change or a career move, it is important to track and document measurable results and develop cross-platform experience. Employment opportunities in the tech sector are different today, with specialists being rewarded – there are risks to cloud infrastructure careers, but they are real.
