A 24-year-old American Airlines employee was accused of helping with a sweepstakes scam against a 75-year-old woman in Florida, who was her victim, with the help of her standby travel benefits. The victim lost some $23,310, investigators say. The story has resonated throughout the industry, since allegations of airline employee misconduct can not just put the job on the line, but the livelihood as well.

Key Highlights / Quick Facts

  • Accused: Destiny Blake, 24, of Brooklyn, New York
  • Alleged loss: Around $23,310 from a 75-year-old Palm Coast, Florida resident
  • Alleged scheme: A fake prize call, a mailed gift card, cash and Zelle transfers, then 88 credit card charges
  • Travel link: A standby flight to Daytona Beach on Nov. 18, 2025, using employee travel benefits
  • Charges: Organized scheme to defraud, fraudulent use of personal identification information of a person 60 or older, and grand theft over $20,000
  • Status: Released on a $30,000 bond; these are allegations, and no conviction has been reported

What Investigators Say Happened

Deputies say the victim was contacted by a caller pretending to be a sweepstakes caller, who told her in November 2025 she had won a prize. After that, her e-mail account was hijacked, and within days she had withdrawn $14,000 from her bank. The flight attendant was given cash and Zelle payments totalling approximately $14,220, flew standby to Daytona Beach, went there for a short period and came back the same day, authorities say. On Oct. 16, 2026, an arrest warrant was issued, and the arrest was made by CBP officers in Miami.

Why Staff Travel Privileges Are the First Thing at Risk

Flying standby is NOT a right; it is a privilege. An airline employee benefits policy typically provides for privileges to be suspended during the review period, making the suspension of employee travel benefits one of the quickest airline employee misconduct consequences. Any outcome from the reports reviewed is unknown, so take them with a pinch of salt as far as her employment is concerned.

Can American Airlines Employee Misconduct End a Flight Attendant’s Career?

In many cases, yes. Flight Attendant employment is dependent on the rules of the company and, for many, a union agreement. Employers don’t always have to be convinced that there has been a violation of the employee code of conduct; it may just be found that way. The fact that an employee has been terminated for dishonesty is usually a sign of serious dishonesty, and a decision to fire an employee for fraud may be made before a court decides if he or she is guilty or innocent of misconduct.

Trust is also a key ingredient of aviation. In the aviation industry, employee accountability is heightened because crew members have security credentials and have access to restricted areas.

How Disciplinary Procedures Typically Work

While details vary from carrier to contract, the disciplinary process for airline staff is typically the following: A complaint is received – internal review collects records and statements – employee placed on leave or benefits suspended – hearing – warning, suspension or termination. It is often possible to obtain Union representation.

What Airline Workers Can Do to Protect Themselves

  • Know and read the handbook and what is considered misconduct.
  • Do not allow others to use your identification, travel privileges or credentials.
  • If a “prize” or payment is requested unexpectedly, it’s a red flag.
  • If you’re ever questioned, seek advice from a union representative or employment attorney.

The Bottom Line

Although this case has not been proven in court, any lesson for aviation workers would be to never get into trouble with an airline employee misconduct claim, as it could lead to an investigation, denial of benefits and even job loss before a judgment even occurs. The best protection is knowledge of the rules!
