The Nepal floods has now reached its highest level – catastrophic – with at least 133 Indian nationals reported as missing in the floods that have left hundreds of others unaccounted for among several nationalities near the Nepal-China border. India has deployed teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in the border areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, sent 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid and activated helplines for the affected families. What Triggered the Nepal Floods India Alert?
A strong landslide closed off the Bhote Koshi River near the Nepal-China border, releasing a wall of water down the river through the mountain valleys of Nepal. A glacier could have ripped off a mountain and crashed into the valley, where it caused or greatly exacerbated the landslide’s effects, scientists say.
The water level in the Trishuli River at Furke Khola, about 160 km upstream from the Indian border, witnessed a sharp and sudden rise in water level, which was dangerous. The floodwater is likely to flow downstream into India’s river Gandak in Bihar, prompting Nepal flood warnings to be issued far beyond the immediate disaster area.
Who Is Missing — and Where Were They?
Most of the 133 Indians who were missing were pilgrims on the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage. This ancient holy path to Tibet traverses through Raswagadhi, located on the Nepal side of the border with China. When the floods hit, most of them were arrested in hotels and homestays around the region, waiting to enter Tibet.
The Nepal tourism ministry has admitted that hundreds of foreign nationals are missing in all, and Indian nationals are the biggest group among them. More than 300 foreigners from various nations are still missing, among them at least 47 Americans, reports said, quoting Nepali authorities.
India’s Response: NDRF, Aid, and Diplomacy
India has responded to the devastating floods in Nepal on several fronts.
On the ground: NDRF was deployed in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh (Bihar shares a direct border with Nepal) in border districts on high alert.
In Bihar, 9 NDRF teams are deployed, while there are more teams at West Champaran and Muzaffarpur.
There is also a Uttar Pradesh team in Kushinagar. A team of NDRF consists of no less than 30 trained persons.
Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) supplies and essential medicines of 10 tonnes were dispatched to Nepal by Relief, which is a rapid deployment that indicates the gravity attached to Nepal flood rescue operations by the Government.
Diplomatic engagement: India’s external affairs ministry had opened its embassy in Kathmandu and had provided emergency helpline numbers for families of Indians missing in the country. Senior officials from the Home Ministry, External Affairs Ministry, Jal Shakti Ministry, and Defence Ministry are closely watching the situation round the clock.

Water levels in reservoirs in Nepal are falling, giving some early relief according to the Central Water Commission (CWC), but the government has kept itself in alert mode.
The Bigger Picture: Climate and Trade Impact
Nepal accounts for less than 0.1% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is one of the most climate-sensitive countries in the world. Glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are becoming more frequent and intense due to glaciers that are receding at rates of up to 15 metres per year.
The disaster has also injured the Gyirong Port, which processes about 1/3 of China-Nepal trade, and in the past, similar disruptions have caused goods valued at about $724m annually to be left in the port for months.
