Global – Only 24 percent of the workforce in micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) comprise women, according to the recent study undertaken by staffing and recruitment firm CIEL Human Resources Services.
According to the study, over 20 percent of proprietary micro, small and medium enterprises are owned by women in India, with West Bengal leading at 23.4 percent across the country.
The study also revealed that there is intense demand for workers in the sales and business development domain as there are more than 50 percent of job postings in the MSME segment across the country.
The company’s managing director and CEO, Aditya Narayan Mishra, said, “The MSME sector is one of the major sectors for the growth of the economy. While there has been an increase in the women’s participation rate in the MSME industry, there’s also the need for better gender representation at an executive level.”
In Indian society, women still go through constant pressure to perform well because people think they are only capable of getting married. As a result, thousands of women quit their jobs as they fail to get validation from society. Another main reason for women not being able to make it into the MSME industry is a lack of choice. Working women often find it hard to strike a balance between family and work life due to societal pressure. Most women cannot give their full attention to work more than 8 hours a day as they have a family to manage. Though everything is changing, it will still take a lot of time to change the mentality of Indian society.
Sometimes, women are not considered eligible for a leadership role in the MSME industry. This is one of the main reasons for male dominance in the corporate sector.
