Mexican judge orders the detention of five people in connection with a migrant fire homicide.

In connection with a fire that occurred last week at an immigration detention center in northern Mexico and claimed the lives of 40 migrants, a Mexican judge ordered the detention of three Mexican immigration officials, a private security guard, and a Venezuelan immigrant.

The migrant who is accused of starting the fire is charged with homicide and causing injuries, the Federal Judiciary Council of Mexico announced following the hearing on Tuesday. The four people in charge of security at the Ciudad Juarez facility will be detained on charges of homicide by omission and causing injuries.

Guards are seen walking away when the fire breaks out inside the cell holding migrants last Monday night in a security camera video from the facility, with no attempt made to free the migrants. Whether those guards had access to the cell doors was unclear.

The fire caused serious injuries to over twenty migrants.
