Mexican City In connection with a fire that occurred last week at an immigration detention center in northern Mexico and killed 40 migrants, a Mexican judge ordered the detention of three Mexican immigration officials, a private security guard, and a Venezuelan immigrant.

The migrant who is accused of starting the fire is charged with homicide and causing injuries, the Federal Judiciary Council of Mexico announced following the hearing on Tuesday. The four people in charge of security at the Ciudad Juarez facility will be detained on charges of homicide by omission and causing injuries.

Guards are seen walking away when the fire breaks out inside the cell holding migrants last Monday night in a security camera video from the facility, with no attempt made to free the migrants. Whether those guards had access to the cell doors was unclear.

Is Mexico Migrant Center Fire, Homicide at US Border?

Authorities stated that a fire believed to have been started by migrants protesting their deportation at a Mexican immigration detention facility close to the US border killed at least 38 people, prompting calls for justice on Tuesday 29 March.

After a fire started late on Monday, numerous ambulances and firefighters were dispatched to the National Migration Institute (INM) building in Ciudad Juarez.

The migrants are believed to have started the fire as a protest because they were worried about being deported, according to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Guards at the detention facility appeared to be leaving as a cell containing migrants was engulfed in flames, according to surveillance video that was broadcast by several media outlets and confirmed by a government minister.

“We’ve had this video since last night. But out of respect for the victims, we must be careful not to obstruct the investigations “The interior minister, Adan Augusto Lopez, offered his thoughts on the images.
