Google buyout offers for 2026 are now being issued to employees far beyond the US and the UK. In June, the company extended its Google voluntary exit program to select employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland as Alphabet balances heavy AI spending with rising costs. The move follows hot on the heels of Microsoft launching its own exit offer, bringing tech industry layoffs 2026 back into focus.

Where Are Google Offering Buyouts To Employees?
Google’s latest round of employee buyouts spans five countries, but only some teams are eligible. Google job cuts to be made in five countries, but offers are voluntary.
The packages were launched in 2025 and expanded to more regions to support future priorities, a company spokesperson said. The scheme does not extend to the whole international Google staff. Google Cloud and DeepMind were not included in previous offerings, and the new expansion is understood to be the same. It’s unclear how many employees accepted.
What is meant by Voluntary Severance Packages?
Details are clearest for Switzerland, where Google has some 5,000 employees, including at its Zurich engineering centre. The offer was made known to staff in mid-June and staff had until mid-July to decide. The Exits started in August.
The voluntary severance packages were one month’s salary per year of service, up to a maximum of 12 months. On one team about 50 people, at least four accepted, reportedly. Google has not shared terms for the other four countries, so it is still unclear what Google employee compensation will be under this programme outside of Switzerland.
Why Is Google Offering Exit Packages?
Google buyout offers in 2026 reflect the basic pressure: AI infrastructure, data centres and computing capacity are expensive, and investors have voiced concerns about spending. Alphabet CFO Anat Ashkenazi has said AI and cloud computing are areas of hiring focus, which is why those divisions are not included in the offers.
Rather than reducing budgets across the board, Google seems to be shifting resources around in what appears to be a pattern of Google workforce optimisation and broader Google corporate restructuring.
Layoff vs Buyout: What’s the Difference?
Employees can choose to take a buyout, whereas layoffs are decided by the employer. Google has framed the offer as an option for those who no longer feel in step with the company’s pace or direction.
Buyouts don’t rule out future cuts, though. In at least one division, there were layoffs following voluntary exits, compounding the job security worries among staff who turn down the offer.
How Does Microsoft’s Offer Compare?
Microsoft’s October offer is for eligible employees at Level 70 and below in participating teams in India, the US, the UK and Canada. It is claimed to be open to about 60,000 people. It is time-limited and includes career planning resources and financial assistance. It is about India, not Google’s expansion.
What Does This Mean for the Future of Jobs at Google?
As spending shifts to AI, some jobs may become less central, while demand for specialised AI and cloud skills grows. These Google workforce changes send real financial support to employees affected by Google buyouts, but also send a signal that priorities can change quickly, even at the largest of technology companies.
