Everyone has a rough week at work now and then. You finish a big project, collapse on the sofa, and bounce back by Monday. Workplace burnout doesn’t work like that. The tiredness hangs around, the motivation drains out, and by the time most people admit something is wrong, it has been building for months. Spotting the warning signs early can save you a lot of trouble.

What Is Workplace Burnout?

Burnout is what happens when stress at work goes on too long without a real break or any relief. The World Health Organization calls it an occupational phenomenon and describes three parts: deep exhaustion, a growing sense of distance or negativity toward your job, and a drop in how well you perform. It isn’t a medical diagnosis, but it is taken seriously because it links directly to how work is organised. And it isn’t picky. Nurses, teachers, developers, delivery riders and managers all report it, whether they work in an office or from a kitchen table.

Eight Signs of Workplace Burnout

1. You’re tired all the time- Sleep doesn’t fix it, and weekends barely help.

2. Work stops mattering- Tasks that once felt worthwhile now seem pointless.

3. Sunday night dread- Your stomach tightens at the thought of Monday’s first meeting.

4. Your work slips- Deadlines pass, details get missed, and focus is hard to hold.

5. You turn cold or sharp- Colleagues annoy you, and you’d rather skip conversations.

6. Your body complains- Headaches, knotted shoulders, poor sleep and lingering colds show up.

7. Work follows you home- You answer messages at midnight and feel guilty for relaxing.

8. Doubt creeps in- You wonder if you’re any good at this, even after praise.

One or two of these during a bad week is normal. Several, lasting a few weeks, is a signal. Start small: tell your manager exactly what is overwhelming you, set a stop time and stick to it, and look after your sleep and meals. Proper burnout recovery usually needs other people, so talk to someone you trust, and see a doctor or counsellor if things don’t improve. Rebuilding a healthy work-life balance isn’t a luxury. It’s what lets you keep going.
