The 10 Heads of Ravana, the 10 Faces of a Toxic Workplace: Which Ones Exist in Your Office?

Ravana’s 10 heads are burnt every Dussehra. But the demon king never did leave. He has only recently come into the world of cubicles, boardrooms and group chats. The heads represent human weaknesses, but the same weaknesses are responsible for a negative work environment today. Early detection can help you save your job and your sanity.

The Ten Heads in Your Office

1. Kama (Desire): Favouritism. There are those who can flatter but cannot deliver, and there are those who can deliver but cannot flatter. In an unhealthy leadership environment, people who are good, but not as good as the leader, tend to lose motivation or go back to work without enthusiasm.

2. Krodha (Anger): Unhealthy boss attitudes. Wherever there is a meeting, there is a minefield, as shouting, public humiliation and threats all come into play. Instead of respecting, people are scared, and no one has the courage to provide an honest opinion.

3. Lobha (greed): working for money; Thinking of an endless list of targets and no overtime, it’s hard to imagine a work-life balance. There is no weekend, and health is diminished.

4. Moha (Attachment): Resistance to change. “This is how we have always done things” stifles innovation, encourages poor management techniques, and makes us lose good employees due to other available options.

5. Pride (Mada): Rebellion. When the top brass refuse to assume responsibility and push it down, it becomes very difficult to assume responsibility for oneself.

6. Matsarya (Envy): Office politics. Cooperation turns into betrayal and theft of credits.

7. Manas (Mind): Micromanagement at work place! Too much control creates distrust, it destroys the individual initiative and independent decision making.

8. Buddhi (Intellect): Lack of communication. Teams are confused by mixed messages, hidden decisions and unclear goals; they are stressed and constantly have to go back and repeat work.

9. Chitta (Will): Disengagement. When the effort is not acknowledged, the interest is lost. Quiet quitting can be more about a terrible job than about being lazy and is contagious.

10. Ahankara (Ego): Bullying & Discrimination. Ego-driven managers reject, reject or make others feel unwanted. Bullying and discrimination in the workplace quickly become an environment that is hostile to people’s experience of work, so that it is easier to keep quiet than to speak up.

How to Deal With Toxic Behaviour at Work

  1. Don’t take on 10 heads at once; take on one head at a time. Just a single good habit can help minimise employee stress and provide clarity.
  2. Document everything. Maintain records of harassment and unfair treatment via dates, emails, or witnesses.
  3. Set boundaries. Guard your time and mental wellbeing.
  4. Speak up safely. Take the guidance of HR, a trusted mentor or an ethics channel.
  5. Build allies. People feeling psychologically safe need to feel supported by colleagues.
  6. Know your exit. In a toxic work environment, it may be a good option to leave if things don’t improve.

Leaders: Be Rama, Not Ravana

Healthy culture begins at the top! It’s the leaders that listen, share credit and take ownership of their mistakes that keep employees and have higher employee morale. All of Ravana’s heads are slowly choked with regular feedback, fair policies and respect for personal time.

Final Thoughts

Ravana was clever, but was his downfall his faults? There are some similarities in offices. Identify the number of faces you know in your own workplaces. If you see multiple, it is a workplace that is toxic and must be addressed— sooner the better— so that the fire could burn the right thing.
