In the face of the quick pace of AI development in the web building sector, CEO Linda Tong described the restructuring of Webflow as a strategic change. In a private letter to employees, Tong called the situation an “inflexion point,” implying that those firms that respond swiftly to industry events will prevail.

Tong said there would be many members cut out of Webflow because of the layoff, but didn’t break down the numbers. The company, valued at almost $4 billion in 2022 and with LinkedIn data showing 500 to 1,000 employees, has not given official figures on the extent of the cutbacks.

The premise — “AI is rewriting the rules” for digital experience creation — is one that resonates throughout Silicon Valley. However, critics say hiring AI transformation as the reason to make abrupt and undignified layoffs shows that management is not living up to basic humanity.

Webflow Employees Locked Out: The Security Explanation 

Webflow’s spokesperson said the events were a part of a normal security procedure, not designed to keep employees in the dark, and that they were meant to keep customer data and proprietary information secure, rather than restrict their access to devices and company systems for a number of minutes before a notification was sent out.

Other former workers have been quite specific in their praise of the lack of understanding on the part of leadership around the capabilities and limitations of AI, and also around the risk of prematurely displacing skilled humans, which they believe could result in operational chaos.

This is not the first time that such a debate has come up about AI taking jobs, but it does give it more dimension. No longer just about AI replacing human roles, the question is whether the businesses taking the gamble are being honest, compassionate, and correct about their assumptions.
