AI Copilot at Volkswagen is one of the largest rollouts of the car industry, with Volkswagen Group handing the AI assistant to over 330,000 people.  But for those on the receiving end, it’s just one question that needs to be asked: What really happens on a Monday morning? The timing is also significant, as the media reports a proposed pay freeze, which the company has yet to confirm.

Quick Facts

  • Staff accessed: 330,000+ across the group
  • Monthly Active Users of Copilot Chat: 300,000+
  • The number of AI agents that are running: 26,000+ (in the month leading up to the announcement)
  • Teams using it: engineering, production, procurement and sales
  • Next layer: Work IQ and Microsoft Fabric for the Intelligent Data Foundation.
  • Pay freeze: reportedly being offered for approximately 660,000 employees until 2030; not confirmed:
  • Productivity gains: Not yet measured and published

1. Less Time Lost to Routine Admin

The most noticeable change for most Volkswagen employees when using AI Copilot will be that it is smaller. Whether it’s drafting emails, summarising lengthy conversations, or preparing meeting notes, Microsoft Copilot for employees saves minutes that ultimately translate to hours of productivity. Small savings on individual employees add up if there are this many.

2. Faster Answers in Engineering and Production

Engineers and plant teams waste a tremendous amount of time searching for specifications, previous decisions, documents, etc. People can save time searching and spend more time solving problems at the line or at the drawing board with the help of AI in engineering and manufacturing that will surface that material in seconds.

3. Smarter Procurement and Sales Work

When customers read through supplier terms and conditions and supplier salespeople write up their customer proposals, they’re dealing with tons of text and numbers. AI can help streamline procurement and sales by summarising contracts, identifying deviations and generating initial drafts, while the human touch takes care of negotiations and relationship-building.

5. Agents with Repetitive Workflows

AI-powered workflow automation is no longer just a chat thing: There are already over 26,000 agents using it. Certain tasks like routing can be delegated to an agent who can pull the data or prepare a report and submit the same to the employee to be reviewed and approved.

5. Better-Informed Decisions

Copilot integrates with business processes and company information via Microsoft Work IQ. AI Copilot at Volkswagen: managers and specialists receive relevant context quicker because it is based on the group’s unified data platform, and not on their own individual files.

What Workers Should Keep in Mind

There is no proof of how the AI Copilot has made an impact on Volkswagen in real-world use, as Microsoft hasn’t revealed the financial terms or how much productivity has been gained. The aim of Volkswagen’s head of group data and AI is to support better and more efficient work on a large scale and securely, and Microsoft Germany’s head says it can free up time for more valuable work.

Meanwhile, the pay-freeze offer, which would also be affecting variable pay, benefits and jobs, has come into conflict with the Global Works Council and IG Metall, which refuse to accept any pay freezes and maintain that pay is to be determined through collective bargaining. The reports are speculation, according to a company spokesperson, so talks will determine what happens next.

The message for Volkswagen workers is mixed: AI Copilot is a reality, but so is the learning curve, and the benefits will be subject to negotiation. More detail could be revealed at the Microsoft Frontier Tour in Cologne on 22 October 2026, where Volkswagen will showcase its approach.
