UK-France Migrant Deal Ends Today: What UK Work Visa Applicants Need to Know

UK-France Migrant Deal

The “one in, one out” scheme (with the UK and France) has officially ended processing of new applications as of today, 20 October 2026. The pilot had the effect that the UK was able to return small boat arrivals to France whilst taking an equal number of people who had legitimate claims. The good news for legal UK work visa applicants is that this deal doesn’t impact your skilled worker visa or work visa application in the UK in any way. All the information you need.

What Was the UK-France “One In, One Out” Deal?

The UK-France migration deal was a bilateral pilot, with the scheme brought into the UK a year ago. For each individual small boat migrant that the UK returned to France, France would return one of the same number of people for whom it was thought that the UK had a legitimate asylum claim.

Under the scheme, some 1,500 people were deported to France, a number which the UK Government privately judged to be not high enough to justify the continued deportation of people. The deal has been terminated and is no longer being renewed, as increasing the number of removals was not easy to do in practice.

Does the UK-France Migrant Deal Affect UK Work Visas?

No, and here’s the big issue for the foreign workers.

The UK-France migration deal was tailored to deal with illegal crossings of the Channel and with asylum seekers. It was not connected with the immigration system of law. When applying for a:

  • UK Skilled Worker visa
  • HQPs – Health and Care Worker visa
  • Global Talent visa
  • Graduate visa
  • Student visa

If so, this end of the deal doesn’t alter any aspect of your application, eligibility or the processing period. The rules for work visas in the UK for 2026 are unchanged.

The Home Office has announced it will draw on the lessons learnt in this pilot to speed up the removal process for migrants without any right of stay in the UK. Meanwhile, there are 42% fewer Channel crossings in 2026 than at the same time last year, which both governments attribute to more cooperation in enforcing the rule.

What UK Work Visa Applicants Should Actually Focus On in October 2026

The UK-France migrant deal ending does not affect legal work visas, so here are the areas where you should focus:

  • Sponsor licence requirements: Check that your employer in the UK has a valid sponsor licence before applying for a Skilled Worker visa.
  • Changes to salary thresholds: Earlier this year, the UK increased minimum salary requirements for Skilled Worker visas. Check that the salary you are being offered is the correct level for your SOC code.
  • English language requirements: Many of the work visa routes available in the UK require a test of English proficiency – check which tests you need for your visa route.
  • Average time to process: A standard UK work visa takes about 3 weeks. This can be reduced by priority services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the UK-France “1 in 1 out” rule on the end of the visa impact my UK work visa application?

No. This only applied to those asylum seekers who crossed the Channel without permission. Those applying for legal work visas are treated to a different process altogether and are unaffected.

What happens after the UK-France migrant deal ends?

Removal flights will continue for people who have no right to stay in the UK. The government has indicated that lessons learned from the pilot will be applied when it scales up the return operations, but this does not affect the legal immigration system.

Does this deal mean the UK’s immigration rules will change in 2026?

There has been no announcement of any change to the UK’s work visa rules once this deal expires. There are no changes to the current Skilled Worker visa rules, salary thresholds and eligibility criteria.

Why did the agreement between the UK and France to tackle migration collapse?

The scheme was deemed too small in size. The number of removals completed (approximately 1500 in more than 1 year) was not close to what was required for a deal to be viable long-term.

Will this be replaced with a new agreement between the UK and France?

Both governments have said they will continue to work together on the Channel crossings, although nothing has been announced about a replacement scheme yet.
