Trump Administration Conducts Controversial Worksite Raid in Newark

The targeted enforcement operation launched by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Newark, New Jersey resulted in the detention of undocumented immigrants alongside American citizens on Thursday as reported by reuters. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka condemned the immigration raid by describing it as unconstitutional while stressing that a veteran who served in the U.S. military also lost his freedom in the operation.

The operation developed after President Donald Trump implemented orders to decrease irregular border crossings. ICE officials declared the raid was a “targeted enforcement operation” while announcing that agents would need identification from people they encountered during these operations. White House representative Karoline Leavitt confirmed the arrest of 538 undocumented immigrants who belonged to two categories: Following a presidential order to reduce illegal immigration “illegal immigrant criminals” was the group that got arrested and it contained elements both from Venezuelan prisons and convicted ex-offenders.

The mayor declared Newark would defend all residents against illegal terrorization as the city operates under sanctuary provisions for new immigrants. This situation activates significant concerns about civil rights protections and exposes the current weaknesses of immigration enforcement standards under the new presidential administration.
