No Return: UK Imposes Lifetime Ban on Illegal Channel Migrants

The government will announce on Monday stringent new laws aimed at deterring migrants from taking ‘irregular routes’, which will prevent illegal channel arrivals from returning to the country.

New legislation has been proposed in Britain which seeks to impose a lifetime ban on those migrants who have arrived via ‘irregular routes’ such as small boats across the Channel. Ministers behind this move are hoping it acts as a deterrent to illegal Channel crossings, sending a harsh message to those considering entering the UK unlawfully, according to UK’s Daily Mail.

Individuals who attempt to enter the UK illegally will be banned from obtaining citizenship or permanent settlement in Britain for the rest of their lives, according to the new Illegal Migration Bill, which is due to be introduced on Monday. As part of the bill, additional measures are expected to limit asylum claims and streamline the process by which irregular migrants can be removed from the country by the Home Office.

“This new Bill will mean that if you come here illegally, you will not only be swiftly removed from the UK, but you will never be allowed back,” a government source told UK’s Daily Mail.

The key issue for next year’s elections

It is expected that the small-boat migrant issue will be a major point of contention in the upcoming election, which is scheduled for the end of next year. The Labour party is not prioritising the issue among its five key objectives.

Currently, those who enter the UK illegally can face a two- to five-year re-entry ban, depending on the circumstances, while foreign offenders can be barred for up to ten years. As a result of the upcoming measures, however, the restrictions are expected to be significantly expanded, resulting in a permanent ban on re-entering the country, even for visitors.

Migrants from safe countries like Albania may reconsider crossing the Channel illegally if they face a lifetime ban from reentering Britain as a result of the proposed measures.

Moreover, the new laws are expected to limit the use of human rights laws to prevent Channel migrants from being removed. As a result of the legislation, asylum seekers arriving by irregular routes will likely have fewer claims under Labour’s Human Rights Act. Also, it will allow the Home Office to require that legal appeals be filed abroad rather than in Britain.

Emmanuel Macron and the Prime Minister are scheduled to meet on Friday for a critical summit. To prevent migrants from leaving French shores, it is believed that the UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak will demand a substantial increase in beach patrols. Small-boat crossings increased to almost 46,000 in 2021, up from 28,500 in 2021. Ministers have warned that 80,000 migrants could make the perilous trip this year.

Inadmissibility measures and other aspects of the new Bill are believed to violate refugee conventions, according to human rights campaigners.
