Is CNN’s Layoff Wave a Turning Point for Traditional Television News?

CNN has announced that they are planning to reduce its workforce with the very recent round of layoffs CNN decided to cut off 200 employees. This decision came as a focus of increasing digital-focused strategy. 

Mark Thompson the CEO of CNN shared an official memo to staff on Thursday. Thompson said, “Our objective is simple: to shift CNN’s gravity towards the platforms and products where the audience themselves are shifting”.

The restructuring comes at a time when CNN is failing to get good television ratings, according to the reports the TV ratings have reduced after the presidential election. 

What CNN is planning after the layoffs? 

CNN has given the reason that the layoff is focused on increasing the digital presence. So they are planning to include plans to develop new subscription products and enable digital subscribers to stream news on any device. Corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery has committed $70 million to support these initiatives.

So these job cuts will impact of television business of CNN. Thompson said these positions will be filled with new hires for digital expansion. Additionally, CNN is preparing to announce adjustments to its television lineup, with reports suggesting Wolf Blitzer may transition to a morning show.
