Haiti humanitarian crisis: Progress seen on the political front despite security-related setbacks
Haiti is seeing signs of progress in a political transition process to restore democratic institutions despite serious setbacks in terms of security, according to the Special Representative and Head of the UN office in the country, BINUH.
Simultaneously, armed gangs continue to terrorise the Haitian population and the brutal levels of insecurity have seriously impacted humanitarian operations across the country. Last year, gangs attacked commercial aircraft near the capital Port-au-Prince airport.
The gangs have also carried out attacks across Port-au-Prince, including the killing of 207 people last month in the Cité Soleil neighbourhood. Despite the concerning security crisis, the UN is committed to scaling up its presence as soon as conditions permit.
