Infosys, India’s second-largest IT services firm, is under increasing fire, with a report indicating that the number of young employees (under 30) in the company has declined to a 15-year low. The development has sparked worries about the fact that artificial intelligence is making inroads into basic jobs in the tech industry.

The trend builds upon a wave of investments in generative AI, automation, and productivity-enhancing technologies across the globe by businesses. This has left many industry experts wondering if the days of the large-scale intake of freshers into the IT industry are slowly fading away.

What the Decline in Young Employees Means

New figures from the Infosys workforce trends reveal a major change in the workforce. The firm has been known for having an annual large campus recruitment drive that introduces thousands of students to the workforce each year. Then these freshers would be trained before entering into Software Development, Software Testing, Software Support and Software Maintenance-related projects.

A recent study on the number of employees under 30 years of age at Infosys, however, indicates that the number of young men and women coming into the organisation has reduced as compared to the previous years. The company is still recruiting graduates, but it seems that the rate is not as fast as it was in previous growth cycles.

This has sparked speculation of less reliance on massive numbers of entry-level personnel traditionally responsible for repetitive coding, testing, documentation and support activities.

Is AI Replacing Fresher Jobs?

The debate on the substitution of fresh jobs by AI is gaining momentum in the technology sector around the globe.

Today’s AI systems can write code, detect errors, test software, write technical documentation, etc., and help with customer support. Artificial intelligence-driven technologies can automate and accelerate processes which were performed by a number of junior engineers previously.

However, it definitely does not mean that fresh graduates are no longer needed. On the contrary, organizations might want to hire employees that possess sufficient AI, analytics, and automation knowledge right from their graduation.

With more and more artificial intelligence finding its applications in low-level jobs, both organizations and graduates should rethink traditional career paths in technology.

Infosys Fresher Hiring Still Matters

In spite of all the concerns regarding automation, the hiring of freshers is an integral part of the talent management practices at Infosys. Although there is a wide range of big enterprise IT service providers, they will still need a steady influx of skilled workers to serve their future needs and demands.

There are new trends emerging in terms of how the workforces get hired, though. The modern employers are increasingly inclined towards candidates who can work together with the AI assistants rather than perform tedious tasks. The reason for such a trend lies in the general changes that occur in the workforce because of AI.

The need for AI-ready talent will become more prominent over the next few years as companies aim to increase their efficiency and cut costs.

What It Means for the Future of IT Jobs

Infosys’ decreasing number of young workers can signal the future of aging people in the Indian technology industry. The reason behind it is the slowing process of IT recruitment, technology-related layoffs, and changes in the nature of the business because of AI.

As students and professionals look for careers, the message is clear: AI, cloud, cyber security and data engineering skills may be more relevant than ever in the quest for automation and software opportunities.

AI will eliminate some of the traditional entry-level tasks, but will also provide opportunities. Routine work with recruitment is likely to fade away in favour of the more specialised and complementary areas of skills not dependent on artificial intelligence in the future.
