Google Layoffs Hit Cybersecurity Teams: Is Cybersecurity Still a Safe Career?

If you believed that you could secure a job in cybersecurity, then Google has just made it more complicated. The round of Google’s most recent layoffs didn’t only target standard corporate positions. This time, the cuts made it into some of the most trusted security units in the world, and that’s leaving many professionals scratching their heads: So what could be more secure than it was before Google layoffs?

What Actually Happened?

Google Workforce Reduction (WPR) activities over the last two weeks were far-reaching in Google Cloud – and the impact was significant. The units that could be impacted included Google’s Threat Intelligence Group, a team world-class in their expertise and research in the field of state-sponsored hackers, and staff at Mandiant, one of the most advanced cybersecurity groups in the world that Google acquired in 2022.

Soon, employees and former employees started commenting on the layoffs on LinkedIn, demonstrating just how surprising the Google Layoffs were — even for those in these teams.

It hasn’t been confirmed to a wider audience that the number of those affected has been determined, but at least one employee was informed that the decision made was about reallocating investments into “high-growth areas,” a term that is widely interpreted as a euphemism for AI.

The Bigger Picture: It’s Not Just Google

Let’s get real – Google Restructuring 2026 is a part of a great extent of great change that’s on the horizon for the industry.

Meta has recently released an initial round of global job cuts of about 10% of its employees.

When announcing major cuts to its staff, both Coinbase and Block say artificial intelligence investment priorities are at the top of the list.

Cloudflare has announced plans for the “agentic AI era,” leading to a 25 per cent reduction in its workforce, which includes the loss of more than 1,100 jobs.

They all have one thing in common: the companies are spending investment funds on AI, and where they perceive “inefficiency”, they are cutting it. Even top-notch security research is apparently not spared.

The job cuts of this nature, like those by Alphabet, reflect a change in the attitudes of big tech toward various kinds of skillsets. If even cyber threat hunters are at stake, it’s time for everyone in the profession to re-think his/her positioning.

So… is Cyber Security A Good Career after Google Layoffs?

Yes, but with an asterisk.

There’s no end to the need for cybersecurity professionals. Cyber threats are no longer a slow burn, but are in full swing. The threat landscape is growing rapidly: from nation-state attacks to ransomware, and to AI-powered phishing attacks.

The changing factor is its location and the premium skills.

What’s still in strong demand:

  • Cloud security architects
  • AI security experts (yes, there are AI security experts)
  • Incident response professionals
  • Security engineers working inside product teams. Engineers in product teams that are dedicated to security.

What’s getting squeezed:

  • Research institutes in the centralised service that are not connected to revenue
  • Roles where AI tools are starting to take over some parts of the process.
  • Jobs in companies that are undergoing restructuring with aggressive Google cost-cutting measures.

What Should Cybersecurity Professionals Do Right Now?

The Google AI Job Cuts are not a death sentence, but rather a wake-up call. Here are some steps to staying ahead:

  1. Understand how to use AI tools, instead of fighting them. AI-driven threat detection and analysis pros will be much more useful than those not using AI.
  2. Focus on high-demand areas: AI security, OT/ICS security and cloud-native security are strong growth areas right now.
  3. Develop your personal brand by posting research, doing open source work, speaking at conferences. If the job loss occurs, visible experts are called for; invisible experts are not called for.
  4. Ride the wave of business that’s not going to go away — financial services, healthcare and critical infrastructure are poaching the talent pool and are not cutting security budgets.

The Bottom Line

The layoffs at Google hurt a whole profession, if not the individual victims — Google has been taking a blow to its elite cybersecurity teams. Turns out, not a single role is immune from the restructuring trend now going on due to AI.

However, the fact remains that the fundamental requirement for cybersecurity-skilled personnel? That’s not going away any time soon. The professionals well positioned to adapt and upskill, and to make themselves integral parts of the security and AI equation, will have a field day.

The field is not in imminent danger of death. It’s simply evolving and very rapidly.
