As the strike by sanitation workers of the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation (DMC) entered the second day on Thursday, coal reeked from the streets and roads of the city.
After the strike in the last 48 hours, huge piles of garbage and heaps of domestic waste are visible in the streets, lanes and markets of Coal City.
On Wednesday evening The DMC and district administration and officials requested the striking safai karamcharis to stop protesting and retrace their steps and withdraw their agitation, but they refused to do so.
The sweepers of the DMC, most of them on contract, went on an indefinite strike on Wednesday demanding the arrest of 20 employees of the Jharkhand Mineral Area Development Authority (JMADA), who had approached the Municipal Commissioner on Tuesday evening in support of their demands. Satyendra Kumar was besieged.
20 JMADA are in trouble because the DMC management has lodged an FIR against them. The reason is assaulting the Municipal Commissioner.

What is JMADA?
It is a 107 year old autonomous civic body, that caters to the water and sanitation needs of the people of the colliery in the twin districts of Dhanbad, and Bokaro.
From 2009 the headquarters of DMC is running in a rented building at JMADA Complex, Lubicircular Road.
The dharna by the JMADA employees is not new, they are on strike from last three months. Whereas the Municipal Commissioner DMC has also been given the additional charge of Managing Director, JMADA.
On Tuesday, the workers gheraoed Satyendra Kumar in the office for more than 6 hours and in the evening when he tried to leave the office, they sat in front of his car. On next day The DMC workers protested in Town Commissioner’s gherao.
The strike is affecting Sindri, Jharia, Dhanbad, Chhatabad and Katras districts. The government should come in action fast.
