In the midst of the hopes of NHS leaders, the dispute is resurfacing once again. The BMA resident doctor strike has returned, and it is now a four-day stoppage with the possibility of tens of thousands of patients in England suffering as a result. All the information you need, no jargon.

When Is the Strike Happening?

Mark your calendars:

  • Starts: 7:00 am, Monday 15 June 2026
  • Ends: 6:59 am, Friday 19 June 2026

That’s 96 hours of industrial action, the 16th round of strikes by resident doctors since 2022.  BMA members will not be allowed to start any shift that falls in this time period.

Why Are Doctors Striking Again?

The government had refused to budge on pay and talks with the new Health Secretary, James Murray, stalled. The “intransigence” of the new leadership had left the BMA’s Resident Doctors Committee with “no option” but to send out a new signal of action, it said.

BMA Resident Doctors Committee Chair Jack Fletcher said, “Thousands of doctors are still exiting the NHS and salaries are still a fifth less in real terms than they were in 2008.”

The BMA resident doctors strike in June 2026 is merely the latest in a long series of simmering-and-boiling tensions between the BMA and government.

What Are the Doctors Actually Demanding?

The BMA resident doctors strike has two key demands.

1. Pay Restoration

The real-term value of the salaries of resident doctors has fallen by 26% to 33% over 15 years, according to the resident doctors. They are not interested in a pay increase that is merely in line with inflation.

2. More Training Jobs & Career Stability

The NHS is experiencing an increasing “jobs bottleneck”. There aren’t enough speciality training posts to move into for thousands of doctors who finish their foundation training. The BMA is calling for thousands of additional training opportunities to remedy this shortage of NHS workers.

What Does the Government Say?

The government is adamant and has responded with dismay. Health Secretary James Murray claims resident doctors have already been given a 33.4% cumulative pay increase over the past four years, which is the highest achieved by any public sector group. He says the BMA’s latest financial demands are “unrealistic, unaffordable and unsustainable.

The Department of Health also says that an offer of up to 4,500 new specialty training places over three years had already been put in place, but the time for introducing these has now passed this year.

What’s the Impact on Patients?

The June 2026 NHS strike will likely bring a lot of disruption:

  • Multiple treatments, diagnostic procedures and outpatient visits will be delayed or rescheduled, likely tens of thousands of them.
  • NHS England estimates that since 2022 over 1.5 million cancelled or rescheduled appointments have been suffered by the UK due to past strikes by resident doctors.
  • The new action has been termed by hospital officials as “rash and wholly irresponsible.

What Happens Next?

The BMA has said it will declare additional strike dates in July if there is no progress made. The union still has a strike mandate in place through August of 2026.

The BMA industrial action has shown no signs of abating, unless both sides reach a consensus – and at this moment, there appears to be a huge chasm between them.
