  • Evaluate your work arrangement – determine whether your current or desired employer is open to remote jobs in foreign countries for Americans, or search work-from-anywhere jobs in the USA on sites like LinkedIn, Remotive, and We Work Remotely.
  • Research visa options – investigate programs of US citizens’ digital nomad visa by country; many of them require evidence of income, health insurance, and a clean background check.
  • Organise your finances – discuss with a tax advisor the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, and open a free international bank account.
  • Plan your move – look into countries that will hire US citizens without visa sponsorship, in case you want a local employer, or find online jobs where US citizens can work without visa sponsorship, in case you want to work in a local company.
  • Test before you commit- before permanently transitioning, spend one to three months in your target country.

Is Leaving the U.S. for Work Abroad Worth It?

The statistics indicate that the trend is not decelerating. The high-paying jobs abroad for Americans are becoming more and more competitive, especially in the technological, consulting, educational, and healthcare sectors. Living abroad as an American is a completely viable way to save money, especially in markets where the dollar stretches a lot further.

The digital nomad lifestyle in the USA, which used to be considered an eccentric lifestyle, is now a mainstream career. Whether it is a desire to leave 9 to 5 and go to England, or to find stress-free jobs in England, or to simply construct a better lifestyle not in the USA, 2026 is going to have more of what we are going to call stress-free jobs than any previous generation of American workers has ever had.
