Agriculture, forestry and fishing

Agriculture, forestry and fishing are the most dangerous jobs in Australia. The fatality rate per 100,000 workers was 13.1 in 2020. The agriculture, forestry and fishing industries recorded the highest fatality rate in 2021.

According to the Work-Related Traumatic Injury Fatalities report, in Queensland, agriculture, forestry and fishing workers had the highest fatality rate at 18.4 per 100,000 workers. The highest number of fatalities resulted from vehicle collisions and machinery operators.

Transport, postal and warehousing

The transport, postal and warehousing industry provides important services to Australians. In 2019, Transport, postal and warehousing accounted for almost a third (32%) of fatalities. There were 7.8 fatalities per 100,000 workers in 2020. As many as 29 workers have been killed because of accidents in this sector since the start of this year.

Construction

Construction is one of the most dangerous jobs in Australia. Almost 7 workers have been killed because of accidents since the start of this year. From 2015 to 2019, there were 150 worker fatalities in the Construction industry in Australia. Vehicle collisions are the common mechanisms of worker fatalities in this industry.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing is one of the industries identified as a national priority for prevention activities in the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy. In 2018, 13 workers in the manufacturing sector died because of their jobs. In 2020, 19 people died because of their jobs. Reportedly, 4 people have died in this sector since the beginning of this year.

Wholesale trade

The wholesale trade industry includes transportation, installation, maintenance and repair occupations. In 2020, there were 2 fatalities in the industry. In 2021, there was 1 fatality in this industry. However, many workers get injured because of their jobs.

Mining

The mining industry includes riggers, excavators, drillers and crane operators. The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) report for 2020-21 showed there were two fatalities and 402 serious accidents in this sector. It is one of the most dangerous jobs in Australia.

Arts and recreation services

Arts and recreation services also suffer from workplace injuries. People usually work in zoos, parks, recreational sports and amusement centres. In 2020, the arts and recreation sector had 2,120 serious accidents and 1 death. Reportedly, 4 people died in 2021 in this sector.

Health and community services

Health and community sector jobs are the most challenging jobs. This sector has the highest number of worker compensation claims, with 17,345 claims being lodged between 2019-2020.

Electricity, gas, water and waste services

The Electricity, gas, water and waste services sector has also become dangerous in recent years.  4 people have died since the start of this year in this sector. Electricians, plumbers, gas workers, industrial waste management and dangerous waste disposal workers work in this sector.

Administrative and support services

The administrative and support services industry witnessed 6 deaths in 2020. The jobs include cleaning, pest control and gardening services. It is one of the most dangerous jobs in Australia.
