How Do UK Passport Free Airports 2026 Checks Work?
A passport is not inserted into a reader, but instead you step up to an eGate and look at the camera. The system takes a picture of your face and matches it to pre-existing passport, immigration and travel records. The gate is opened after the match has been confirmed.
These biometric checks at the border in the UK are not replacing human supervision and are merely a reinforcement of those checks. When a traveller is identified as a “flagged traveller”, an officer intervenes, or the passenger is required to check their passport in the old-fashioned way.
Which Airports Offer UK Passport Free Airports 2026 Access?
The contactless gates are being delivered to Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, London City, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle and Stansted. There will be a phased transition of existing eGates over time, not all at once.
