$90 Social Security Check: Working Seniors May Still Be Left Out — Who Qualifies for the October Payment?

Found an unexpected $90 in your account? You’re not alone. The $90 Social Security check is a one-time Medicare premium rebate that is paid by Social Security. Qualifying is not based on employment status but on Medicare coverage. If you’re on traditional Medicare Part B and don’t pay an income-related premium or get premium help from Medicaid, you likely qualify. Many others won’t.

Why Working Seniors May Be Left Out

Keeping working often means seniors make more money, and if they make a certain amount of money, they might have an income-related Part B premium. You are taken off the list just by that. Others remain on the employer’s plan and do not enrol in Part B and thus do not have a premium to rebate. If you selected Medicare Advantage, you’re out, too.

The good news is that you don’t automatically lose the chance to earn a paycheck.

When Will You See the Money?

Typically, direct deposit occurs on Oct. 8th. Later in the month, some will get a paper copy of their Social Security check from the Treasury. Be alert for mail, as it may appear to be routine open-enrollment paper. Not sure if it’s true or false? Call 1-800-MEDICARE. You can follow up on a payment by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 starting October 15.

Why It Matters

In 2026, Part B premiums will increase by over $200 per year and will increase approximately $80 more per year in 2027. The $90 helps, but it’s not enough. This is a one-time payment, so retirees and working seniors should plan on increasing their health care expenses next year.

FAQs

Do seniors working get the $90 Social Security check?

How many don’t get it?

About 40 million Part B beneficiaries.

So what if I don’t get a check?

Please hold for paper checks until later in October, and call 1-800-772-1213 after October 15.
