Nicaragua, 4-Catholic Priest Sentenced To Decades Behind Bars

On Monday, four Catholic priests were sentenced to 10 years in prison by judge Nicaraguan.

The reason that is burning, in this case, is that they were fueling “sedition” and “spreading false news”. Rights groups called for an increased crackdown on critics of President Daniel Ortega.

This is not the first case of a priest serving a sentence behind bars for decades.

Similar charges were applied to two Catholic seminarians who were studying for the priesthood, sending them to prison for years.

Bishop Rolando Alvarez is leading the six men, who are from the Diocese of Matagalpa in Nicaragua. He was arrested with them last August.

Bishop Rolando Alvarez has been jailed under house arrest while awaiting trial.

On Monday the cameraman from a Catholic television channel was also sentenced to 10 years in prison.

After these happened Human Rights groups are criticizing them, the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights posted a criticism on Twitter, “We condemn these perverse actions of the regime, which violate human rights,”

Human rights groups are showing their anger and calling for the speedy release of all Prestige.

The Nicaraguan government and the  Catholic bishops of the country conference did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ortega claimed the leaders to overthrow him when he tried as a mediator with protest groups during the unrest that killed more than 300 people. From then that time the government of Ortega expelled Catholic missionaries and nuns.

All means of communication, such as television and radio stations, were shut down and more than a dozen priests were arrested.

Now all the human rights watchdogs are in a mood to protest against the recent bad incident with the Catholic priests.
