NBCUniversal Layoffs 2026: Which Streaming Tech Jobs Are at Risk as Comcast Prepares to Split the Business?

NBCUniversal Layoffs

NBCUniversal is cutting employees in its global streaming technology team, primarily its engineering and quality assurance (QA) teams. Most cuts are anticipated at Sky in Europe, although some US-based NBCUniversal staff are affected as well. The catalyst is the Comcast NBCUniversal split: Comcast plans to spin off NBCUniversal and Sky as a separate public company next summer, and the tech structure is being reshaped first. The precise headcount is unconfirmed.

Quick Facts

  • What we heard: On Thursday, NBCUniversal announced changes to its Global Streaming Technology organisation.
  • Who’s affected: Mainly engineering and QA roles at Sky, plus some staff in the US.
  • How many: Not set. In the UK, the figures are based on employee consultation.
  • Reason: The spin-off, margin pressure and intense competition in streaming.
  • When: Affected staff told midweek; UK consultations have begun.

Why Is NBCUniversal Cutting Streaming Technology Jobs?

Three forces are coming together. But first, the spin-off: A stand-alone NBCUniversal and Sky need their own leaner tech setup, separate from Comcast’s connectivity business. Secondly, margins. Media companies are feeling the pressure to prove streaming can be profitable after years of heavy spending, and Peacock has just recently turned profitable on an adjusted EBITDA basis. Third, competitors like Netflix and YouTube keep raising the bar, so costs have to come down even as products get better.

The changes would provide the right structure and resources to support future growth, the company said.

What Happens to Sky Workers?

UK law requires a consultation period, and redundancies are not effective straight away. This allows Sky’s engineering and QA staff to review proposals, ask questions and explore redeployment.

Part of a Bigger Pattern

The NBCUniversal layoffs aren’t a one-time move. After closing Showmax, NBCUniversal cut dozens of jobs in March. Disney has already laid off several rounds this year, and Paramount Skydance is widely expected to cut staff after its planned Warner Bros. Discovery deal. Media industry layoffs in 2026 are increasingly about restructuring around a streaming-first future.

What Should Affected Workers Do?

  • Read your consultation paperwork closely.
  • Update your CV and portfolio while you are still in a job.
  • Ask about the redeployment and severance terms.
  • Meet other people in the streaming and media-tech companies.
