Marvel Rivals Is Big Success but Development Team Gets Laid Off Marvel Rivals hit it big in the gaming world, brown-nosing into an arena willing to accept the new competitor to Overwatch. The game is massively successful, with more than 200,000 players on Steam alone. But with this success came a surprise—layoffs of the US development team by NetEase.
The shock was broken by director Thaddeus Sasser on LinkedIn. “What a strange industry this is,” he posted. “We just helped finish one of those blockbusters and here we are laid off!”
Jack Burrows, a level designer for Marvel Rivals, confirmed the layoffs. “Well, I just lost my job with all my incredible American coworkers. Almost too hard to believe, especially; the game is doing so well.
Why would NetEase do this?
Marvel Rivals has not only proven popular; it is also raking in the riches. Some reports say the game made an amazing $136 million in its first month. So, what would motivate such a monumental firing of the very team that put it on its feet?
One theory is that this was all part of the plan; open the gates with the game first, and then downsize and save on salary. NetEase had been shrinking its US operations for months. It withdrew funding from several game studios, late into 2024, including those formed by BioWare and Halo veterans. Earlier it had also shuttered much of Ouka Studios, yet another case in point, before their very own game, Visions of Mana, had even launched.
As of this moment, Marvel Rivals is continuing to gain ground while being supported by smaller staff, and fans are left to wonder—will the game maintain vibrancy, or will its success simply fall into oblivion like so many of those other fleeting hits?
