London Workers’ Earnings Surpass Scottish Annual Salary in Just Nine Months, Report Reveals
London workers are paid more than Scottish workers – 9 months’ pay in London equals the annual wage in Scotland, as new research from the Centre for Cities think tank has shown. From the Cities Outlook 2025 report, London has the highest Weekly Adult Pay Standart of £950.20 hence an annual wage scale that is £13,800 higher than Scotland’s.
Assessing 63 large towns and cities in the UK, the authors point out that only Edinburgh and Aberdeen belong to the league of seven cities with non-Greater South East above-average pay. Weekly wages stand at £785.50 in Edinburgh and £765.80 in Aberdeen, while the Scottish average is £686.
Andrew Carter, Chief Executive of the Centre for Cities noted that such a vision required further aggressive action, especially on the UK Government’s industrial strategy. That is why Carter said, “The brutal detail in Cities Outlook is that an incrementalist policy is not going to be sufficient,” Cities Outlook: “If we are to realise the intentions of the Labour Government to increase living standards across the country and to rebalance them in favour of the regions, there is a necessity for the growth in the city deals to be directed towards sectors that are often avant-garde.”
