India: Retail inflation for industrial workers jumps to 6.16% in January

The retail inflation for industrial workers saw a noteworthy jump last month, rising to 6.16% from 5.50% in December last year, official data released on Wednesday suggested.

While the food inflation for January stood at 5.69% compared to 4.10% the month before, the figure stood at 6.22% during the corresponding month a year before.

The year-on-year inflation for January stood at 6.16% as against 5.50% in the previous month and 5.84% in the corresponding period of the preceding fiscal, a labour ministry statement underscored.

The All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers for the month surged by 0.5 points and stood at 132.8. On 1-month percentage change, CPI-IW increased by 0.38% with respect to the month before compared to a decrease of 0.24% recorded between corresponding months in the previous year, the labour ministry added.

The housing group provided the maximum upward boost in the current index, contributing 0.40 percentage points to the total change.

Entities like house rent, toilet soap, medicine allopathic, pan finished, zarda, cooked meal, egg hen, lady finger, brinjal, kundru, cumin seed/jira, orange, apple, banana, cow milk, wheat atta, and wheat were responsible for the rise in the index.

However, certain other entities like poultry chicken, sunflower oil, soybean oil, radish, tomato, green coriander leaves, onion, capsicum, french beans, peas, cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, and potato put downward pressure on the index and checked the growth.
