ESI Enrollment Crosses 15 Lakh in February: What Benefits Are New Employees Getting?

The number of people being enrolled under the ESI scheme has touched an all-time high point with more than 15 lakh people having been enrolled under the ESI Scheme during the month of February 2026. The increase in the rate of enrolment under ESIC reflects the increasing number of people joining the organized sector in India. However, what does this really mean for the millions of new low-paid workers joining the scheme?

Who is Enrolled in ESI?

The limit of the ESI scheme for workers is up to ₹21000 per month. The ceiling for women with disabilities is increased to ₹25000/month. Any worker within these ranges at an establishment covered under the ESIC is automatically covered, and registration of the worker with the ESIC is a simple pathway to be a member of India’s social security system.

One key takeaway from the February data is the significant share of young people (under 25) who are enrolling as new employees, and gaining ready access to the employee welfare benefits that India has long promised.

Core ESI Benefits for New Employees

All new employees who join the company in February 2026 will receive a full range of labour welfare benefits on Day One! The scheme covers the following:

1. Comprehensive Medical Care

The medical coverage given by ESIC starts from the first day of employment and covers the employee and his/her family (including spouse, children and dependent parents). This is one of the most easily accessible employee health insurance benefits in the country, with treatment provided in the ESIC hospitals and dispensaries throughout the country.

2. ESI Maternity Benefits

Women workers are entitled to paid maternity leave of 26 weeks, paid at 100% of their average daily wage. For adoptions and commissioning, 12 weeks of paid leave is offered. This is still considered one of the most important ESI maternity benefits under the Indian labour laws.

3. ESIC Sickness Benefits

For the purposes of the ESIC cash benefits structure, employees’ sick leave status is certified for up to 91 days per year and will be paid 70% of their daily wages. A long-term disease benefit extends to 2 years for 34 specific diseases, where 80% of wages are paid during this benefit period.

4. Disability and Support Payments (DB)

If a worker becomes temporarily or permanently disabled as a result of an occupational injury, they will have access to up to 90% of their wages. If an employee dies, their beneficiaries will get a lifelong pension, giving families the crucial support they need in case of tragedy.

5. Funeral Expenses

A lump-sum benefit is paid to defray funeral expenses and to provide a decent funeral during the grieving period.

How Contributions Work

ESI coverage of salaried workers is based on a contribution principle. The employers pay 3.25% of the gross monthly salary, and employees pay 0.75%, a small nominal amount which entitles them to a wide array of social security benefits that should be enjoyed by the formal sector workers of India.

Why These ESIC Latest Updates 2026 are Important?

This is more than a number when it comes to the enrollment in February 2026. They are a testament to the fact that the ESIC registration procedure is adding value to employers and workers, as the process is gaining traction. They are an indicator of the fact that the ESIC registration process is actually adding value to both employers and workers! For people new to the job, particularly for young people and migrants coming to work in the city, these benefits can be a game-changer.

The formal workforce of India has continued to grow, and this continuous enrollment in ESIC suggests a positive development towards a more secure and inclusive labor market.
