If you’re a salaried employee in India with a salary of up to 21,000 INR a month, then chances are you’re registered with the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). But do you know how to check your online ESIC status? In 2016, with audit-bot checks and other compliance tests, it’s even more important to check. This article has all the details.
Who Is Eligible? Minimum Salary and Coverage for ESIC in 2026
ESIC coverage from April 2026 is mandatory for employees with a gross monthly salary of up to ₹21,000 (₹25,000 for Persons with Disability) in factories with 10 or more workers. The salary includes monthly Basic, HRA, DA, Overtime and Incentives.
The important change in 2026 is the 50% Basic pay: the Basic pay must be at least 50% of your CTC. Allowances that go beyond this will be covered for ESI calculations: more people could be covered than they realise.
If your salary goes over ₹21,000 during the period (e.g., in January 2026, you will continue to be covered until March 31 2026; from April 1 2026, you will be excluded.
Contributions have remained the same since July 2019: Employer: 3.25% / Employee: 0.75% / Total: 4%.
Checking Your ESIC Registration in 2026
If you need to find out whether you have been registered with ESIC, you can do it on the official ESIC website or using the UMANG app.
Step 1: Pay Slip Verification
Ensure that the pay slip has the rate of ESI contribution at 0.75%, together with your 10-digit IP number. The Insurance Number acts as the identification number to access any ESIC facility.
Step 2 – Visiting the ESIC Insured Person Portal
Visit the ESIC Insured Person Portal and register yourself or login by filling up your Insurance Number, Date of Birth, and Mobile Number. You will be able to download your e-Pehchan card and know your ESIC registration and cover details.
Step 3 – Use the UMANG App
Or, click on the UMANG app, and then the ESIC card option to download your e-Pehchan card (using your mobile number, no need for a computer).
Step 4 – Check Aadhaar Seeding
To get benefits, your ESI account must be linked to Aadhaar. Ensure this is done by asking your employer, as your ESIC registration status may not be verified otherwise.
ESIC Benefits for All Covered Employees
Once your ESIC registration status has been verified, you (and your family) can access several benefits under the ESIC scheme:
- Medical Benefits – Free treatment at ESIC dispensaries/hospitals
- Sickness Benefit – Cash for medical leave
- Maternity Benefit – For pregnant workers
- Disablement & Dependent’s Benefit – Cash payment in case of injury or death of insured
These are the reasons why ESIC is the best social security benefit for organised workers in India. Ensuring you’re enrolled with ESIC assures these benefits in case of need.

The New ESIC Compliance for 2026
The assessment period for April 2026 (for the period from October to March) is important. ESIC has also started using artificial intelligence to make comparisons between the EPFO and GST returns. This means discrepancies between employers’ returns and payroll are identified earlier.
Employers must file returns by:
11 May – for the October-March contribution period
11 November – for the April – September contribution period
Employees should check their ESIC status online frequently to ensure their coverage status is in line with the employer’s contribution – especially after a salary increase, job change or payroll update.
