64% Favor Recognizing Same-Sex Marriage In Japan, Survey Finds

Respondents to a Kyodo News poll said Japan has a high rate of people who want a recognized same-sex marriage, the show showed the percentage who want it is 64%.

The reports and survey come after a wide range of growing criticism of the Conservative government’s approach to LGBTQ issues and statements from ministers.

This was a telephone survey. It was held over a three-day period from Saturday to Monday. The results were published on Monday and 88.4% also said recent remarks hostile to LGBTQ people by acting secretary to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida were inappropriate.

Check out this news from earlier this month where Masayoshi Arai, an elite bureaucrat, said gay marriage is wrong. However, during an off-the-record conversation with reporters, he was fired after saying that he “doesn’t want to live next door” to an LGBTQ couple and that he “doesn’t want” LGBTQ people.

In the Group of Seven the Japan is the only country who does not legally recognize same-sex marriage. The conservative Liberal Democratic Party headed by Kishida is opposed to the idea, and they always ignore it as a name for family values. “It is a matter that could change people’s views on family, sense of values and society.”- Said the Kishida.

However now the Kyodo News poll report again highlights the will of the people of Japan, where only 24.9% of respondents said they were not in favor of same-sex marriage. Others want it!

The topic is closely related to LGBTQ rights. Poll of Monday showed the approval rating for cabinet  of conservative  Kishida stood at 33.6%, virtually unchanged from late last month.

The survey was conducted by 500 randomly selected households with eligible voters on landline phones and 2,453 mobile phone numbers. It obtained responses from 424 households ,636 mobile phone users.
