Why does the UK observe the third Monday of January as “Blue Monday” Annually?

Every year the third Monday of January is observed as the Blue Monday in the UK which aims to focus on mental health and well-being, and to promote uplifting steps during the gloomy winter months.

What is the origin of “Blue Monday” in the UK?

The factors which include cold/winter season, post-holiday financial strain, and the sense of low mood & motivation, and monotony affects the mental health of the individuals to focus on their work progressively. And based on these factors a psychologist named Dr.Cliff Arnall termed the word “Blue Monday” and calculated that the people are observed more depressed on the third Monday of January and found a formula to calculate their depression,

In 2005, the UK travel company ‘Sky Travel’ initiated many hefty promotions and marketing campaigns regarding the importance of mental health and the significance of “Blue Monday”.

  • Free counseling is also available on this day.
  • Some of the common places where people gather or utilise the services including gyms, super markets, travel agencies, food and beverages and many other sectors people will receive offers and discounts as a part of the campaign.
  • Common activities like meditation, yoga will be hosted.
  • One of the strongest medium of informations is the social media, many digital contents will get circulated through social media pages with “#BlueMonday” to convert it into trends.

Though, this is a humanitarian initiative sprouted from a marketing campaign many experts of mental health claim that this looks intimidating since, everyday is unpredictable which can turn from one side to another due to various factors, ‘we cannot assume that this day could be a most depressing day in a year’. They advocate that this ‘Blue Monday’ looks quite pessimistic rather than passing on positive motivation and ideas.
