A group of UN Human Rights Experts has issued a strong warning regarding the unintended consequences of recent restrictive measures adopted by the European Union. In a statement released on January 26, 2026, the experts highlighted that regulations targeting specific scholars and institutions are severely undermining Academic Freedom and the right to education. According to the professionals, such actions are politically driven, but they actually disenfranchise citizens of their basic rights since they cannot engage in global forums and access vital scientific collaboration. This is given the concern that is increasingly mounting that the existing policies have alienated researchers to the rest of the world.
Academic Freedom Stifled by Over-Compliance
The specialists, such as Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan, pointed out that it is not just about asset freezes. They shape the atmosphere of fear where universities and publishers over-compliance in order not to risk being sued, leading to the summary rejection of papers and joint projects termination.
