uk new train strikes to bring further disruption. everything you need to know
The latest industrial action on Saturday by members of the RMT union at 14 rail companies is expected to introduce passengers in the UK to more disruption. The workers are striking as part of a long-running dispute over jobs, compensations and conditions.
While the operators are based in England, some run their services into Scotland and Wales. It’s feared the action could affect family holiday travel amid a number of schools across the country on their six-week summer holidays. Members of two rail unions are currently striking.
Members of the RMT union are taking industrial action at 14 rail companies:
LNER
Northern Trains
Southeastern
South Western Railway
TransPennine Express
West Midlands Trains
East Midlands Railway
GTR
Great Western Railway
Greater Anglia
Avanti West Coast
C2C
Chiltern Railways
CrossCountry
According to the RMT, 20,000 of its members will walk out, including train managers, guards and station staff. Previous strikes saw scores of cancellations, with some lines not operating at all. Even services on the operating lines tended to start later and finish earlier than normal.
National Rail has called on passengers to check with the operator before travelling, raising concerns over large areas of the rail network potentially having little or no services. Nevertheless, it appears the action on Saturday is the last one in the diary at the moment.
Meanwhile, members of ASLEF, the driver’s union, are imposing an overtime ban instead of a complete strike, with services set to be disrupted again from July 31 to August 5. The majority of train companies depend on drivers working overtime to run their full schedules.
