The point to be noted is that Argentina emerges as one of the world’s leading exporters of processed soybeans and the revenues from commodity exports are one of the important sources of foreign exchange needed to pay off debts and finance imports amid a prolonged economic downturn. How did the strike begin?
The strike began when lawmakers in the lower house of Argentina’s Congress began debating two sweeping economic reform bills proposed by Milei, which called for privatization and tighter fiscal policy, as well as taxes on higher wages and labor reform.
According to Union general secretary Daniel Succi’s statement, the strike would continue until the Congress session continues. Milei took power in December promising to cut public spending and curb hyperinflation, but his reform efforts have faced stiff resistance from center-left opponents.

An Attempt To Compromise
Following the protest regarding the labor reform bill, the maritime union has called for a demonstration in Congress on Tuesday. The bills up for debate include provisions to decrease the salary threshold subject to income tax, part of an earlier Milei-backed package.
The higher authorities agreed with the union’s opposition to the income tax change, but have expressed concerns. According to the higher authorities, this industry has a lot of scope and offers very high salaries but it’s not a better option to affect it with a strike. Regarding this case, the session of the lower house is expected to drag on and may last till Tuesday.
