India to Cut Visa Application Forms by 70%: What Foreign Travellers Need to Know About the 2027 Changes

The 9-page e-visa application is no picnic. But India is now intent on changing that. The India visa application changes in 2027 will eliminate duplicate queries, streamline each application form and introduce uniformity across the world. If you’re thinking of travelling, here is what you can expect to happen and what it means for you.

Quick Facts

  • Form length cut: Fields will be expected to be cut by around 70%.
  • The format will be the same for all 22 visa types.
  • Rollout: It is expected that changes will be effective starting in 2027.
  • Local address: This could be a hotel/guest house address, depending on the situation.
  • Current e-visa: Has 9 pages and is issued for 147 countries.
  • Tourist arrivals: 91.5 lakh in 2025, still below the 1.093 crore in 2019.

What the India Visa Form Simplification Involves

The new forms would be streamlined and easy to use, officials say. The number of fields will be reduced by around 70%, including the removal of redundant fields. The fields such as “district” will be deleted since they don’t have a global equivalent. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) has already conducted several talks to further ease the visa regime.

An Easier Local Address Rule

Currently, applicants are required to give an Indian address. In the proposed changes to the India visa application, the tourist could just enter the hotel/guest house address. This is a minor change that gets rid of one actual reason people aren’t visiting the site.

Why India Is Making This Move

The India visa application changes in 2027 are significant because of the surge in tourism. In 2019, 1.093 crore foreign tourists were welcomed in India. Arrivals were 95 lakh in 2023, around 99 lakh in 2024 and 91.5 lakh in 2025. It’s not back to pre-pandemic heights, and the travel sector is pushing hard to make access easier. A brief, streamlined online visa application process in India is considered one of the most effective means of assistance.

What the Tourism Industry Still Wants

The reworking of the form is just a portion of the wish list. The industry has requested the Government to:

  • Have a consistent application window (120 days) for all countries, as some do not have 120 days.
  • Expand access to e-visa for visitors to China. Currently, China, Pakistan and Afghanistan are not included in the list of 147 countries.
  • Replace post-arrival application for Protected Area Permits and/or Restricted Area Permits with issuance at the time of the visa.
  • Provide the forms in Spanish, German and Italian, in addition to English.

All of these are still not confirmed.

What the India Visa Application Changes 2027 Mean for Travellers

As of today, it is the same visa route for e-visa, which involves an electronic travel authorisation and nine sub-categories of e-visa (e-Tourist, e-Business, e-Medical, e-Student, etc.). Take up early registration, ensure passport and accommodation details are ready and verify the official portal. In case you are travelling to a place such as Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh or the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, please keep in mind that you will still need a permit.

The Bottom Line

The visa application changes in India 2027 will not amend who can enter into the country, however they should make the procedure to apply for the visa less arduous. Fewer fields, a less complicated address rule and a cleaner layout could take away an actual barrier for casual tourists. Please stay updated with the official announcement for the exact date, and please consider the timeline of the India visa application changes in 2027 as probable until the government officially announces it.
