in strike 2 hunger strikers were taken to hospital
2 of the contract workers, who had been observing a fast unto death since July 19, were admitted to the hospital on Friday because of a decline in their health. The 108 Ambulance transported the striking workers quickly to the hospital in Abhanpur, which is about 25 km from Raipur.
Prem Rajput and Shrikant Laskar, two workers, were participating in an ongoing hunger strike with other workers, according to the Chhattisgarh Sarv Vibhagiya Samvida Karmchari Mahasangh. They hadn’t consumed even a sip of water in the previous 48 hours. Laskar was sent to Raipur’s Ambedkar Hospital after it was determined that his condition was serious.
At the Tuta of Naya Raipur dharna picket, Rajput and Laskar passed out. Since July 3, 2023, about 45,000 contract workers have participated in strikes in support of being regularized.
Suraj Singh Thakur, a spokesperson for the Mahasangh, reported that donations were coming in from all over the state.
In the meantime, the BJP has offered its support to the contractual workers, promising to abide by their demands if it wins the Chhattisgarh state election. Former chief minister Raman Singh and party state president Arun Sao made this promise.
In the legislative assembly on Thursday, CM Baghel declared that the government would raise the pay of contractual workers by 27%.
According to Tiwari, the president of Mahasangh state, the government promised a 48% increase in contractual workers’ pay but only announced a 27% increase in the assembly. The contractual employees have been on indefinite strike since July 3 in demand of regularisation, pensions, seniority benefits, salary increases, promotions, social security protections, and job security up to the age of 62. However, the government hasn’t started a conversation with the protesters about their demands just yet.
